Interview with David Ying, General Manager of MGM Grand Sanya

As the MGM Grand Sanya is a luxury hotel co-invested by Diaoyutai State Guesthouse and MGM Resorts International, how does its operation philosophy reflect both Chinese and Western elements?

Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality is a joint venture between Diaoyutai State Guesthouse of China, the highest standard service venue for hosting foreign heads of state, and MGM Resorts International, the top global luxury hotel group. As the first five star hotel established in mainland China by Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality, MGM Grand Sanya is inspired by the dining, nightlife and entertainment elements from MGM Grand in Las Vegas combined with Diaoyutai State Guesthouse outstanding service philosophy. Your hotel has been awarded as Travel Weekly 2013 “Best beach resort conference hotel”. What’s your secret to success?

MGM Grand Sanya is located at Yalong Bay, which is regarded as the “the most beautiful bay in the world” and was chosen to be constructed in line with a sustainable strategy to be an exclusive and romantic resort destination. The emergence of MGM Grand Sanya will strengthen MGM’s brand influence in China through its 675 guest rooms that includes 596 standard rooms, 73 suites and 6 exclusive villas on the beachfront offer, and 12 world-class F&B and entertainment outlets to satisfy every craving. MGM Grand Sanya is becoming the premier provider of fashion, entertainment, fine dining and luxury in the resort paradise of Sanya and setting to create the concept of vocation with entertainment.

 

Some experts warn that there is an oversupply of resort hotels in Sanya. What is your opinion? What measures will you take to consolidate your position in the cut-throat incentive and convention market?

According to a recent report by the leading Chinese online booking agency Ctrip.com, Sanya is ranked first among China’s top 10 tourism destinations for “Lung Cleaning Tours”. With its good air and limited ocean and beach resources, Sanya still lists at the top of the most popular domestic tours in the future.

In 2014, the Sanya government is increasing financial subsidies to encourage airlines to expand air networks. The local government started offering financial subsidies in 2006 to boost the airline industry in Sanya, when passenger throughput was 4.3 million. Meanwhile, Sanya Phoenix International Airport has started its phase-3 expansion project to meet surging passenger traffic, and is slated to break ground in 2015 when the throughput will be over 15 million. After the reconstruction of the airport, more new passengers, plus stable return passengers will point to the increasing appetite for guest rooms and tourism products.

What trends do you expect to see in the 2014 Chinese MICE market?

With ever-increasing demand for MICE business under the optimistic growth of China’s economy environment, and the market focus being shifted to foreign corporates, the hotel needs to restructure its sales strategies to meet the changes. Besides, as the market for online booking, wireless booking, and tourism applications matures, more corporates start to buy business travel products online, and the hotel will focus on online promotion and stimulating more online business.
